Coweta citizens will go to the polls Tuesday to vote on whether to extend the countywide Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, or SPLOST. A “Yes” vote will extend the one-cent SPLOST for six more years beginning January 1, 2019 since the current SPLOST ends on December 31, 2018.
As a former Newnan City Councilman, I know how critical it is that the city and county be able to maintain and improve our streets and roads and keep them safe for our residents. SPLOST dollars also help maintain and improve Coweta’s excellent system of parks and recreational areas, which improves property values while keeping property taxes at current reasonable rates.
Continuing this one-cent sales tax is a common-sense way for us to continue to maintain not just our streets, roads and recreational facilities but also this community’s great quality of life. Since so many SPLOST dollars come from out-of-county shoppers, it just makes good business sense to take advantage of these dollars that come our way.
As someone who believes in shopping locally, I am always aware that spending money at Coweta County businesses provides the SPLOST dollars that help make our community the wonderful place we are proud to call home. Everyone knows it’s convenient to shop online and have Amazon deliver, but Amazon has never built a road or funded a public safety improvement in Coweta County. Spending our dollars locally produces the SPLOST dollars that help our community thrive. I’ll be enthusiastically voting “Yes” on November 7 and hope you will too.
